The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Fayetteville Road between Wall and Steele streets. The vehicle, a white Chevy 3500 HD, was traveling towards downtown Rockingham when the driver said the bug flew in, creating a distraction.

The vehicle left the roadway, hit the telephone pole and traveled an unofficial distance of 219 feet before coming to a stop.

Personnel with the Rockingham Police Department, Rockingham Fire Department and First Health EMS responded to the scene, as did Duke Energy. King’s Body Shop hauled the vehicle from the scene.

It’s not immediately known if the driver was cited in the incident. Authorities said the same pole, which is placed several feet off the roadway but just as towards-town travelers come out of a slight bend, was replaced only a couple of weeks ago.
