RICHMOND COUNTY — A light falling snow in the early hours of Tuesday morning has caused local officials to cancel classes today at Richmond Community College, Richmond Early College and Richmond County Schools.
The National Weather Service has included the county in a Winter Weather Advisory through 4 p.m. Snow is expected to fall through the early afternoon hours, with between 1 and 2 inches of accumulation.
Meteorologist Tim Buckley, of WFMY News 2 in Greensboro, said this forecast “was way underdone.”
“This system is putting down way more snow than seemed humanly possible yesterday, Buckley shared on his Facebook page. “We were thinking dusting to (half an inch). Some folks will end up with more than 1 inch.”
Buckley cautioned readers of “a much bigger threat” in a second winter storm starting late Wednesday through Thursday morning “for what could be several inches.”
“Admittedly, I play it conservative heading up to these winter events. You will see many snow maps out there with higher totals right now. However, here in NC, more often than not those high end maps don’t pan out. Once I make a map, I can’t take it back — so I’d rather start low, and build up if necessary.”
“Buckle up,” Buckley warned.
