Ellerbe man arrested in fatal shooting

A 31-year-old Hamlet man was killed another another was wounded in an early Saturday morning incident on Main Street in Hamlet.

Hamlet police officers have arrested Mitchell Green Jr., 21, of Ellerbe. Green was charged with second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. The shooting took place between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m.

Police identified the victims as Terry Jay Smith, 31, who was killed in the incident, and Tyrone Plair. Police said Plair was shot once but is expected to recover.

Green is being held without bond and is confined at the Richmond County Jail.

Hamlet police officers were assisted by the State Bureau of Investigation, Rockingham Police Department and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Police did not reveal a motive for the shooting and noted the investigation is continuing.

Green has a record. He received a suspended sentence upon conviction for a misdemeanor simple assault February 2010.
