Pastor Hill: The God of peace

Our Fountain of Peace

Romans 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;

31 That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;

32 That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed.

33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

The “God of Peace.” The Bible, five times, identifies our God as the God of Peace. We regard this divine title as expressing, first of all, what God is in Himself. For those who have placed their trust in God we could describe God as our “Fountain of Peace.”

Imagine a large tiered fountain that begins at the top with just a small basin and the water spills over into another larger basin, finally ending in a large pool at the bottom. It is a picture a continual filling of God’s peace. This is achieved by growing in our knowledge of God. The more we know the more peace we are given. As our knowledge of God increases we benefit from the Fountain of Peace in some of the following ways.

Our God is always tranquil. We can live in tranquility because the God of Peace dwells in our hearts. The circumstances of life do not ruffle us as they did when we only knew a little about God. The more we know of God the more we are able to trust Him during all of life’s circumstances. That is why we read in Acts about Peter sleeping when he knew the next day the king would have him executed. He was living in the, “peace that passeth understanding” this peace that many do not understand but the evidence speaks for itself, we have this peace when we trust in the God of peace.

Our God is never taken by surprise for He already knows everything that will happen, “Acts 15:18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.” Even though we are surprised by things that we face in life our God knows in advance and therefore He prepares us for what lies ahead in our future. When we truly believe God has our best interests at heart we can find comfort in our God of peace.

Our God is never disappointed. Even when we read of all the times people have failed God, God still loves us and desires for us to have a relationship with Him. Once again we think of Peter who stated convincingly that he would never deny the Lord, yet we all know that in that same night he denied Jesus three times. God was not disappointed, He used the event to prepare Peter and Peter, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, penned the two epistles that bear his name. He learned how to trust the God of peace.

Our God is a total stranger to unrest, He enjoys undisturbed calm, He is the God of peace. As such, a perpetual calm characterizes His whole being. The Bible also tells us in James 1:17, (“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning,”) that our God is always the same, never changing. We apply this truth to belief, knowing that the presence of God dwells in our hearts, and if He truly is the God of peace, then peace dwells in us.

Peace is one of the grand perfections of the divine nature and character. May we, from this day forward, not allow life’s trials to remove the peace of God from our hearts. The world is in desperate need of peace today. That peace in only obtainable from the God of peace. “Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.”
