Staff report

Multiple news outlets are reporting that Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been injured in a rollover after an early Tuesday afternoon car accident in Charlotte.

Reports indicate Newton suffered multiple fractures in his lower back.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Newton’s car flipped over on a bridge near the intersection of Church Street and Interstate 277, near Bank of America Stadium. It’s believed at least one other vehicle was involved in the incident.

Sources indicate Newton was on the ground being treated, but he was awake and talking to the paramedics.

The extent of Newton’s injuries were not immediately clear. He was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a  nearby hospital for additional evaluation and treatment.

Before 3:30 p.m. Panthers officials published a brief statement on the team’s website.

“Newton is in fair condition and undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center. He will remain there overnight for observation.”
