Obituary: Myrtle Bruce Hudson

obit_iconMyrtle Bruce Hudson of 1305 McDonald Ave., Hamlet, N.C., made her celestial exit on Dec. 23, 2014 after an extended stay at Richmond Pines Healthcare Center, from natural causes.

Born in Ghio, N.C. on Sept. 29, 1922, Myrtle received her education in the Hamlet school system and soon thereafter married her beloved Charles William Hudson on Aug. 11, 1937.

Mrs. Hudson delighted in lively banter and often regaled listeners with stories from her time as a noted aviatrix. Beginning as a novice “Petticoat Pilot” and progressing to pilot in the Civil Air Patrol, Myrtle became a member of “The Ninety-Nines,” an exclusive group of female pilots founded by Amelia Earhart. Her love of all things aeronautic came to fulfillment when she and Charles took over as managers of the Richmond County Regional Airport for a number of years.

A life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Hamlet, Myrtle’s love for service and her generous nature were evident in her work fostering orphaned children.

Left behind to mourn the passing of Myrtle Hudson are her sisters Eloise Davis of Naples, Fla., Shirley McRary of Hamlet, her brother Herbert Bruce also of Hamlet, her grandchildren Bart Hudson of Henderson, Tenn., Beth Hudson Soper of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Donna Hudson of Laurinburg, and Rebecca Hudson Holtorf of Ocean Springs, Miss., along with seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Guiding Myrtle through Heaven’s gates are her parents Robert Elvin Bruce and Lula Covington Bruce, her husband Charles W. Hudson, her sister Nina Roten, and her sons Charles Bruce Hudson and Ralph Earl Hudson.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26 at Harrington Funeral Home.

A celebration of Mrs. Hudson’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26 at Harrington Funeral Home in the Chapel.

Harrington Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Mrs. Hudson.
