ROCKINGHAM — A total of 173 diners paid to share breakfast with Santa Claus at Fatz Cafe Saturday morning.
The inaugural event served as a fundraiser for the Raider Band Fans, a booster club that supports the Richmond Senior High School marching band.
As a non-sanctioned event by a school group, Band Director Mike Ward was unable to demand his students show up to play the role of elves and help serve the meal. Organizers were concerned there might not be enough people to help.
That worry was squashed quickly, however, as a large group of students representing the Marching Raiders show up wearing Santa hats — no, the chief elf did not seem jealous so many were wearing red and white — and elf ears, and smiles as they delivered plates of pancakes to dozens of tables.
Ward was grateful to have, once again, the lesson reinforced that he has a job teaching “such wonderful students.”

Before or after a meal, diners were invited to have their picture taken with Santa in the back portion of the dining room. For $5, local photographer Jimmy McDonald had a mini-studio set up to take the perfect snapshot as Santa listened to boys and girls. McDonald donated each $5 contribution to the Raider band.

Elizabeth Payne, who will turn 1 on New Year’s Day, visits with Santa. It might have been more like “tolerate,” and the candy cane helped smooth things over.
