ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — After a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer, Charles Raye Munn passed peacefully in his sleep early Friday morning, Nov. 28, 2014.
Mr. Munn is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Sharon Munn, as well as by his children, Kim Munn Overcash and husband, Larry Overcash of Statesville, and Charles Raye Munn Jr. (Chuck) and his wife, Jennifer Munn, of Charlotte.
Also surviving Mr. Munn is a host of grandchildren, Kelly Bumgardner (Dustin), Kara Dawkins, Joshua Overcash (Kalyn), Charlotte Turner, Ainsley Munn, Ella Munn, Charles Raye Munn III (Chaz) and great-grandson Everett Overcash. Mr. Munn is also survived by a sister, Mary Alice Byerly of Pinehurst, two sister-in-laws, Jerri Mitchell and Joyce Neal (Rick), brother-in-law, Embra Tucker, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Munn is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Cecil and Eula Mae Munn, and a sister, Cecilia Ann Munn.
Growing up, Charles achieved the honor of Eagle Scout and then went on to graduate from East Carolina University with a BS in Business Administration. He became the operator of Munn’s Coal and Oil and worked for his father for many years until medical problems forced the end of this official work career. Despite his medical disabilities, he loved to help people and worked at the Our Daily Bread Food Ministry until recent health concerns made this too difficult to continue.
Charles loved his wife, his family, eating fish on Friday nights, his animals, and sports (the Dodgers and the Hornets). His sunny disposition and his jovial and persevering attitude towards the obstacles one must overcome in life will be remembered by many and have served as an inspiration to many through the years.
The family would like to thank special friends Billy Ray and Faye Herring and O’Neill and Joan Ginn for their unwavering support through good times and bad. We would also like to thank Richmond County Hospice for their care and support in recent weeks. Many thanks to everyone for the thoughts and prayers, food, cards, and phone calls that have brightened these last few weeks and months.
The visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30 at Watson – King Funeral Home in Rockingham. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Rockingham on Monday, Dec. 1, conducted by Mike Sykes and Allison Coltrane Farrah.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Our Daily Bread Food Ministry, c/o First United Methodist Church, PO Box 637, Rockingham, NC 28380 or Richmond County Hospice, 1119 US Hwy 1 N., Rockingham, NC 28379.
