EAST ROCKINGHAM — Emengecy personnel from three agencies responded Sunday afternoon to a report of a structure fire at a former textile mill on Mill Road.
Volunteer firefighters from East Rockingham and Cordova, and deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, arrived at 165 Mill Road shortly after the call for help was reported to the county emergency dispatch center at 4:09 p.m.
Mitchell Watson, East Rockingham Fire Department chief, said it appeared as if someone had set a fire in order to keep warm during the afternoon, during which the temperature topped out in the mid-50s but felt colder, as rain fell steadily throughout the day.
No one was injured in the incident. Watson said the unknown person or persons who set the fire were not on scene when first-responders arrived.
Watson said the portion of the building in which the fire was set is no longer used. NBP Inc., however, manages a plastics company out of the other side of the building.
