Liberty Tax Services to offer free Affordable Care Act assistance

File exemption requests now to prevent potential tax refund delays

Liberty Tax Service wants to remind local residents that it’s not too late to file for an exemption to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), sometimes referred to as Obamacare. By obtaining an exemption, an individual could reduce his or her tax burden this year, the first year in which the healthcare law will have tax consequences.

“Many people still are confused about the law and its requirements,” said Mary Andrews, of the Rockingham office of Liberty Tax Service. “They don’t know about the exemptions or their eligibility for an exemption.”

LibertyACA requires all Americans or legal residents to have health insurance, have an exemption to coverage or pay a penalty. Penalties for 2014 start at $95 but can reach almost $2,500 for an individual or more than $12,000 for a family with five or more members, based on taxable household income.

Exemptions are available for a wide range of reasons, including: religious objections, hardship, membership in a federally recognized tribe, membership in a healthcare sharing ministry, affordability of coverage and incarceration. Individuals and families can apply for exemptions now and when they file their taxes. Liberty Tax recommends that they apply now because processing the exemption paperwork takes time, and it could delay a tax refund.

Liberty Tax Service is ready and able to assist those who need to file paperwork for an exemption. Liberty will provide the service free of charge.

“Our goal is to help the people of Richmond County who need to file paperwork for an exemption,” Andrews said, “and try to eliminate the unpleasant surprises come tax time.”

Along with exemptions, Liberty can help with other ACA questions or health insurance enrollment. Our office will open on Nov. 15 and will remain open through tax season. Residents can call 910-410-9040 for an ACA appointment or visit our office at 704 E. Broad Ave., Rockingham.
