Bolton couple share Morrow Mountain stories

The Richmond County Writers’ Club held its monthly meeting on the second Sunday in November instead of the regular first Sunday of the month, for a very good reason.

Two of their members, Jay and Azalea Bolton were guests on Nov. 2 of the Morrow Mountain Old Fashion Day festivities, specifically the story telling session. Warmed by a bonfire, surrounded by eager listeners sitting on hay bales, visitors heard numerous ghost stories and tales of yesteryear, after which participants could pan for gold, search for precious “gems” or listen to various bands while drinking apple cider fresh from the apple press cranked by youngsters taking turns experiencing life in the old days. There were many lessons from the old days shared, including how to make flint rock arrowheads.

At the Writers’ Club meeting held at The Hive on Mill Road in East Rockingham, members were chased by sunbeams, moving from table to table, which certainly did not slow up the sharing of numerous original stories and details including a teacup pup sale that turned out to be a coon dog, the antics of tenant farming families sitting under the shade tree, learning the difference between a “river” and a “creek” or choosing biscuits over store-bought loaves of bread, teenagers learning to square dance, hokey-pokey, and bunny hop, then as adults learning to line dance.

All sorts of memories were shared, even a wild tale about a proud fisherman’s wife who caught a ten pound bass, set to be a stuffed wall ornament, but temporarily stuffed into her mother’s freezer, then – surprise – her mother stuffed it into a frying pan for Saturday’s supper.

Concluding the meeting, members were reminded of the invitation to “tell us your story” for publishing in December, including poems that tell a story, submissions to be accepted electronically by visiting “civitasmedia.com/tellusyourstory” by November 14.
