ROCKINGHAM — October is, generally speaking, well known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

And even though Friday night’s pink-clad Richmond Senior High School club members took to the edge of the football field on the last day of the month, the day or date didn’t matter — but the message did.

Khushbu Patel, Hannah Craven, McKenzie Grimes and Bailey Preslar led the home side of the concrete stands through the third annual Pink Night at Raider Stadium, a reminder of those who’d lost their fight with cancer and a moment of victory for those still waging the battle. The four students are members and leaders of the student club CURE — Causes United Raiders Everywhere.

And on that note, the battle hits close to home. Richmond Senior High School journalism teacher Cathy Keys was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer formed by malignant plasma cells.

The girls led the football crowd through a brief but somber, unified message. CURE was started in 2012 by students Taylor Brown and Hollie Hudson as a way for the students and staff at RSHS to show support for Keys.

“We would like to recognize Mrs. Keys, who continues to fight this battle with courage and is a true inspiration to all of us,” Grimes said.

Preslar led everyone in a balloon release — white for those who have lost their battle, pink to encourage those still fighting and purple to celebrate those who have won.
