Obituary: Sam Jarrell

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Mr. Sam V. Jarrell,  71, of Rockingham passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014 after a brave battle with cancer.

He was born Oct. 6, 1943 in Richmond County, a son of the late Sarah Currie and Sam Bennett Jarrell.

Sam will be remembered for his faith in God and being a witness for the Lord.  He was a member of Crestview Baptist Church.  Sam was a veteran, serving in the U. S. Air Force.  He started a career in law enforcement in 1968 with the Rockingham Police Department,  became police chief in Ellerbe, and later retired with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department with the rank of Major.  Sam was honored by the State of North Carolina in September with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Mr. Jarrell leaves behind his devoted wife and best friend , Dianne Austin Jarrell, of 48 years.   He is also survived by his two daughters, Samantha Jarrell Hicks ( Joe) and  Lane Jarrell Street (Brad); three grandchildren, Katelin Pittman, Bennett Street and Gracie Street; siblings, Bennelle Jarrell, Elaine Ross (Gene), Carol Jarrell, Roger Jarrell (Deloris), Ann Andrews, Ricky Jarrell, Terri Doby (Jim); and a large extended family, as well as many close friends.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Bob Jarrell, Gene Jarrell, and Linda Elmore.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:30 p.m.  to 9 p.m. at Roberdel Baptist Church and other times at the home.

flagFuneral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct, 18 at Roberdel Baptist Church with Rev. Robby Stewart officiating.  Interment will follow at Richmond Memorial Park with Air Force military honors.
