Girl Scouts warm tent city with fire pit

EAST ROCKINGHAM — Members of Girl Scout Troop 543 worked Saturday at Place of Grace to build a fire pit.

Place of Grace is a ministry on the property of New Life Church, located on Airport Road in East Rockingham. Girl Scouts solicited donations to help cover the estimated $269 needed for the project.

The girls, including Leah Thompson, Lalia Watkins, Emily Jackson, Maggie Gillespie, Amanda Jackson, Dillan Hurd and Olivia Jackson worked under the supervision of Janice Bryant, Tanya Jackson and Laura Gillespie.

The tent city, which aims to help transition the homeless to more permanent housing, has not yet been approved by county officials. A public hearing is scheduled for a conditional use permit at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the county office building on South Hancock Street in downtown Rockingham.
