Kickoff for this week’s football game between the Richmond Raiders (5-0) and Anson Bearcats (1-4) at Raider Stadium isn’t until 7:30 p.m. Friday, but that hasn’t stopped the party from starting already.

It’s Spirit Week leading up to Homecoming this week at Richmond Senior High School. Monday was America Day. Instead of the traditional school uniform of khaki pants and a polo shirt, students were encouraged to wear red, white and blue or patriotic-themed attire.

Today is Nerd Day. Wednesday is Fictional Character Day, Thursday is Camo Day and Friday is, appropriately Green and Gold Day.

The student pep rally inside the high school gymnasium is set for 9:30 a.m. Friday. School officials said the gym will hold only 1,800. Therefore, students have been given two tickets apiece — intended for family members or friends — for the event.

The pep rally is highlighted by the inaugural presentation of the 35 members of the Homecoming Court and their escorts.

The Homecoming Parade is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Friday. The quarter-mile-long route will begin at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Rockingham and continue along East Washington Street before coming to an end at Harrington Square for a public pep rally.

Last year, the parade was led by the Rockingham Police Department’s Chief Billy Kelly and included Grand Marshal James Clemmons Jr., Richmond County sheriff. This year’s grand marshal is Jeff Dieffenbach of Dieffenbach Motors, Rockingham. RSHS Principal Keith McKenzie asked Dieffenbach to be the grand marshal on May 15 during the car giveaway at Richmond Senior High School.

Members of the Richmond Senior High School Color Guard and Honor Guard, along with the RSHS Junior ROTC Cadet Corps — 167 members strong — marching in cadence.

The units in the parade included: from RSHS, varsity cheerleaders, SADD/TRU, TAS/Skills USA, marching band, junior varsity cheerleaders, FBLA, Art Club and National Honor Society; the Ellerbe Middle School cheerleaders; Leak Street Elementary’s “God Bless the USA”; the Rohanen Middle School cheerleaders; the Rockingham Middle School cheerleaders; the Hamlet Middle School cheerleaders; and the Ninth Grade Academy’s varsity cheerleaders.

The school has given float participants until Wednesday to confirm final numbers, “but it appears that we’ll see many of those we saw last year including the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and other local police departments, the National Guard, area fire departments, school clubs and a handful of surrounding schools in addition to the Homecoming court,” relayed Mallory Brown, director of public relations for Richmond County Schools.

The floats are not judged — in 2013, no prizes were awarded and places were not designated. There was, however, a judges’ table on the porch of the Manufacturer’s Building and a three-judge panel sat as each float stopped to perform.
