HAMLET, N.C. — James Riley Hampton Jr., 88, of Hamlet, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at Richmond County Hospice Haven.
He was born July 12, 1926 in Cabarrus County a son of the late James R. Hampton, Sr. and Minnie Baugh Hampton.
He grew up in Kannapolis and entered the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II. He spent most of his service in Panama and was honorably discharged in 1945. He attended UNC and Appalachian State University. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1955.
James married Alene Kelly on Aug. 29, 1954. He graduated from Catawba College and later earned his master’s degree. James was a teacher, coach, driver’s education instructor, assistant principal and Boy Scout leader. A faithful member of Mark’s Creek Presbyterian Church, James served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon, elder and was most recently named Elder Emeritus in June 2014.
James was a devoted and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alene Kelly Hampton and his children, James Kelly Hampton (Robin) and Janis Hampton, as well as four grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Caroline, Anna, Jed and William. He is also survived by his brothers Leonard Hampton, Everett Hampton, and one sister Betty Reece Hampton.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Marks Creek Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ken Goins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet.
