ELLERBE — Family members gathered nearby a Jones Spring Church Road home Monday morning to mourn the loss of a woman who died in an early Morning morning fire.
First-responders, including firefighters from the Ellerbe Fire Department, were called to the single-story home, located about 2.5 miles north of Ellerbe, at approximately 5:40 a.m. The beige vinyl siding was marred by black soot and nearly five hours after the fire, the smell dominated the otherwise quiet, unmarred Ellerbe countryside.
While firefighters saved much of the home from the blaze, a woman reportedly exited the home, then went back in. She attempted to flee the burning structure one more time but smoke overwhelmed her. She collapsed a few feet from the front door, a family member reported. It’s not clear why she went back inside the home.
