5 caught for snack machine thefts, damage at Hamlet Depot

Four men and a minor were apprehended by Hamlet Police Department officers stemming from two separate incidents of breaking and entering at the Hamlet Depot in downtown Hamlet.

On Aug. 30, police said video surveillance showed three suspects broke into the train depot, broke into a snack machine and stole food. The glass on the machine was busted, police said. Approximately $100 of snacks were taken from the machine.

Miguel Thomas Jr., 19, of Hamlet, and Antonio Ingram, 17, of Hamlet, each were charged with one count of breaking into a coin-operated machine and one count of larceny. Both were processed and held on $500 unsecured bonds of $500.

The minor involved is to be served with a juvenile petition by juvenile services, said police. Authorities declined to identify the minor.

Less than a week later, on Sept. 4, police again responded to a report of a breaking and entering at the train depot. Once again, police said, several items were taking from the snack machine. Video was recovered from the security system and investigators identified the suspects as David Campbell, 26, of Hamlet, and Michael Newkirk, 22, also of Hamlet. The men took about $10 worth of snacks.

Both men were charged with one count of breaking into a coin-operated machine and one count of larceny.

Each suspect was processed and released on $500 unsecured bonds.
