Thirty-one people want to succeed Marchell Adams-David as Hamlet city manager. Edna Cumberland, human resources director for Hamlet, accepted applications through close of business Monday.

New this time around — the successful candidate will be required to live in Hamlet. It’s a stipulation not put on Adams-David; the fact that she lived in Rockingham seemed to ruffle the feathers of some.

HamletAdams-David resigned in July to become assistant city manager of community in the city of Raleigh. She left Hamlet last month. Of the 31 people who want to take her place, 19 have North Carolina addresses, including two from Richmond County. The application process for civil servants is confidential in North Carolina; it’s not known of interim City Manager Tammy Kirkley, who holds the position of city clerk full time, has applied for the post.

Of the remaining 12 candidates, three are from South Carolina, two are from Georgia, two from Texas and one each from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Colorado.

Kirkley did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the timeline to replace Adams-David. The new city manager will be charged with filling the key positions of museum manager/downtown coordinator, parks and recreation director and chief of police.
