EAST ROCKINGHAM — Teachers and staff of Rohanen Middle School brainstormed a way to “one up” Hamlet Middle School in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

During Hamlet’s challenge, staff and students there boasted that they were the best in the county and state. Hamlet Middle School challenged RMS.

Jackie Payne, Rohanen’s media specialist, said HMS is not, in fact, No. 1.

“We’re here to prove ’em wrong,” she said good-naturedly.

The winning idea was to request the help of the East Rockingham Fire Department. Principal Hal Shuler said that the fire department is supportive of all the school efforts. The firefighters showed up in an engine driven by Bill Bayless. He drove the truck onto the football field.

Students and teachers were lined up, some sporting T-shirts made just for the occasion. Starting with the teachers, and staff and then each of the three grades 6, 7, 8 for a estimated total of 250 students the firemen hosed the participants.

“I want to do it one more time,” shouted one 6th grade student.

D’Kayla Irving, also in 6th grade, said it was colder than she thought it would be but “oh yeah” she’d do it again.

The school had about 98 percent of staff getting wet today but “all of our staff helped to raise money for ALS'” said Shuler.

Rohanen was able to rais $316. Shuler and the rest of RMS called out Ellerbe Middle School Principal Melvin Ingram and the rest of the Wildcats; faculty, staff and students. This is Ellerbe Middle’s second challenge – the pressure is on, Wildcats.
