National Night Out set for Aug. 5

RPD_logoThe city of Rockingham and the Rockingham Police Department will host the annual National Night Out event at Cole Plaza, located between City Hall and Thomas Leath Memorial Library on Rockingham Road.

Beginning at 6 p.m., there will be multiple attractions and activities for the public, including:

* finger printing for children
* a dunking booth with various Rockingham officers
* Rockingham Police Department’s Traffic Team distributing information in conjunction with the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety program
* the DWI Driving course
* The Crash Test Dummies will be making their way through the crowd
* Crime Stoppers representatives will be on hand
* Various food vendors and activities for children, including face painting
* The band Hydrenaline will perform during the event

In addition, the cadets from the 2014 Junior Police Academy will be honored during a graduation ceremony during the event. These cadets participated in a week-long session at the Rockingham Police Department and learned many new skills as well as spent time with officers and representatives from county and state agencies who educated them on the many facets of law enforcement and prosecution.

“We have been participating in this event for many years now, and it always turns out to be a positive experience for us and those that attend,” said Rockingham Police Chief Billy Kelly. “I want to invite all to come out and spend time with our officers. I believe that when the community and police department work hand in hand to prevent crime, it produces favorable results for everyone involved and sends a clear message to those that would do our city harm: ‘We will stand against you, and we will do it together.'”

The National Night Out program, held on the first Tuesday each August, has been successful in promoting involvement in crime and drug prevention activities, strengthening police-community relations and encouraging neighborhood camaraderie as part of the fight for safer streets.

Since 1984, National Night Out — dubbed “America’s Night Out Against Crime” — has grown to involve more than 37 million people from more than 15,000 communities.
