Domestic spat leads to arrest

Suspect jailed on $10,000 bond

A Hamlet woman was arrested after an argument with her husband escalated into a violent affair early Friday.

Hamlet Police Department officers responded to a High Street home for a report of a domestic dispute. An officer interviewed both April Rush and her husband. Police said the two did not appear to have been in a physical altercation but in a verbal argument.

The husband agreed to leave the premises “so both involved could cool off.”

The husband’s trip to calm down was stopped short, however, as he was forced to stop when he realized two tires on his vehicle had been cut and were flat. That’s when police said Rush retrieved a tire tool from another vehicle and approached her husband and his vehicle despite officers’ warnings to return home.

Rush allegedly damaged her husband’s truck. She was placed under arrest for resisting, obstructing and delaying an officer of the law. She was placed in the Richmond County Detention Center under a $1,000 secured bond. She posted bail in short order, police said.

Rush returned to Hamlet and entered the Hamlet Police Department. She said she wanted an officer escort to her home to retrieve some of her belongings as she was concerned she would cause trouble if she returned home alone. Rush was told not to return home if trouble would ensue. Rush was then ordered to leave the police department “due to her behavior or she would be arrested again for disorderly conduct.”

Rush left the premises, but the trouble didn’t end there. A short time later, officers responded to the same High Street home. Police said Rush had returned and again argued with her husband. Police said an officer was arriving on scene when Rush was leaving the home in a vehicle. The husband advised that Rush had further damaged his vehicle when she had returned.

Officers tried to stop Rush “but she would not stop,” police said.

A chase ensued and speeds reached 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. Rush drove to Dobbins Heights and stopped on Daniels Street. Hamlet police officers then arrested Rush for the second time. This second time, she was charged with driving while her license was revoked, no vehicle registration, no seat belt and one felony count of fleeing to elude arrest.

Rush was again taken to the Richmond County Detention Center and held on $10,000 secured bond.
