ROCKINGHAM — Late Tuesday morning as many ran for the nearest spot of shade or air-conditioned office, Richard Schoonover stood closer to the sun. About 70 feet closer.
That’s how high the Hughes Welding and Crane Service truck was ablet o live Schoonover towards the steeple on Zion United Methodist Church. The church, with a history that dates back 190 years, is located on Zion Church Road a few miles west of Rockingham. It needed a new roof and repaired steeple.
Church official William Nichols said he had noticed a small leak about a year ago. The $40,000 project, completed in six days, included Hayden Construction, Callahan Roofing and Hughes Welding and Crane Service, all of Rockingham.
Nichols said the church has no plans to go anywhere. Its 113-member congregation, with an average weekly attendance of about 40 each Sunday morning, is looking to grow.
While the church is only 10 years shy of celebrating its 200th anniversary, the cemetery is much older than the church. Nichols said several tombstones, some of which are faded and difficult to read, date back to the 1700s.
