HAMLET — It’s time to be on the lookout for the big yellow school bus.

Community members will get the chance to help a student in need by donating school supplies to area schools during the fifth annual “Stuff the Bus” school supplies drive. Richmond County Schools, United Way of Richmond County, Communities in Schools and Wal-Mart will team up once more to host the drive, and the entire community is encouraged to get involved.

This year’s Stuff the Bus event will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rockingham Wal-Mart location, so make plans to stop by and help provide for a child in need.

Richmond County Schools has participated in the “School Tools” initiative, sponsored by WSOC-TV Channel 9 Eyewitness News, for several years.

“United Way of Richmond County believes that the inability to afford school supplies should not be an obstacle to a child’s success,” Parrish said. “One way that we are working to advance the good of all is to ensure that when school starts this year, every child has the ability to return to the classroom with all of the supplies that are needed for them to be successful.”

Communities in Schools Executive Director Fallon Brewington said that many families of school-aged students benefit largely from community outreach.

“Communities in Schools focuses on Five Basics,” Brewington said. “The third basic is a healthy start and a healthy future. Children can’t concentrate on schoolwork if they don’t even have the basic tools needed, such as school supplies. When families are in need (and often unsure about how to get help from the labyrinth of public agencies), it’s up to the community to step in.”

School begins on Monday, Aug. 25. Your contribution can go a long way to ensure that the children of Richmond County are ready to begin another year.
