John Adams, World War II veteran

John Adams, 95, a Richmond County World War II veteran, humbly accepted, hiding behind a pair of black sunglasses that softened the glare of the hot North Carolina sun, a round of applause when he and a few other World War II veterans were recognized by others in attendance.

On Sunday, Adams passed away.

Adams was born November 22, 1918 in Cook County, Ill., a son of the late Eugene Lawrence and Alberta Coles Adams. He served his country for during World War II and retired after serving 25 years in the U.S. Army Reserve during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Adams entered the Army as an enlisted man on April 7, 1943, at the age of 23. He completed Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, Okla., with an emphasis in field artillery.

He was involved in combat operations throughout the European theater during World War II.

Adams later enrolled in Office Candidate School, graduated as a second lieutenant and retired at the rank of major in 1978 after 35 years of military service in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve.

At the age of 43, Adams successfully completed Special Warfare School and became a Green Beret. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Adams leaves behind a wife, Betty Cagle Adams, whom he met at VFW Post 4203 in Rockingham in October 2001. The two were married that December.

“He didn’t believe in long engagements,” said fellow VFW member Larry Evans.

Along with his wife, Adams leaves behind a son, John K. Adams Jr., of Catawba; a daughter, Sherry Moore of Augusta, Va.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Richmond County Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Kearse Jr. officiating. The family will see friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham.
