Pair arrested in suspected arson cases

Staff report

A Rockingman man and woman have been arrested and charged with second-degree arson after Richmond County sheriff’s deputies responded to a suspicious fire on Hickory Street on two different occasions — on the same day.

Sally Denise Patterson, 55, and James Lewis Legrand, 58, both with Hickory Street addresses, are confined at Richmond County Jail. Patterson was also charged with forgery on an unrelated case. Legrand was processed into Richmond County Jail under a $5,000 secure bond and Patterson under a $7,000 secure bond.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office received a call on June 21 from Richmond County 911 to assist the East Rockingham Fire Department with a suspicious fire on Hickory Street in Hamlet.

Deputies responded and looked into the fire. Approximately two hours later, the house was on fire again and the fire department and deputies responded again.

Later in the day when the investigation was completed, the suspects were both arrested for arson of the residence.
