ELLERBE — With two outs and SALT runners on second and third, Orange Krushers second baseman Ryan Norton-Smith hauled in a liner from Laurie Lovin to end the game and put the finish touches on the Krushers’ 10-7 win Tuesday night at Parsons Field in Ellerbe.
The loss knocked the Sandhills Alternative Learning Team from the ranks of the undefeated. They fall to 3-1. The Orange Krushers improve to 3-1 with the win.
When SALT took a 5-1 lead after the first inning, it seemed that the early season matchup between the Hot Mamas Softball League contenders wouldn’t be what many expected it to be.
Then it was 6-4 SALT. Then suddenly it was 10-6 Orange Krushers. SALT scored once in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.
Norton-Smith said she normally plays catcher but the coach had moved her to second base mid-game. Whatever the reason, the strategy paid off.
As the ball jumped off Lovin’s bat and headed towards Norton-Smith between first and second base, it’s difficult to imagine how fast it might have appeared to the batter or to her teammates. But to Norton-Smith, “it really didn’t appear to be coming that fast.”
She casually and calmly stepped up, set herself and hauled in the ball to clinch the win.
