ROCKINGHAM — Sometimes, less is more. At least that’s the idea 16 players of the 2nd annual Vickie Butler Memorial Cornhole Tournament walked away with Saturday from VFW Post 4203 in Rockingham.

After this year’s 16 players — 24 less than last year’s tournament — raised more than $2,500 through corn hole, a 50/50 drawing, an auction and food sales, the idea that fewer people showed up to play mattered a whole lot less. Proceeds from the event will benefit Hospice Haven, operated by Richmond County Hospice Inc.

Butler lost her fight with cancer on May 19, 2010.

Hospice Haven is a 6-bed acute care inpatient center located on the grounds of the Richmond County Hospice administrative office at 1119 U.S.Route 1 in Rockingham. It is a separate building dedicated to the exclusive use of existing and newly admitted hospice patients.

Converted from a residential facility, the “hospice hospital” opened in 2012 and is staffed by a team of professionals trained in end-of-life care.  It manages emergencies, uncontrolled pain and other symptoms exceeding the scope of caregivers in the home. It also serves hospice patients transferred from a hospital. A registered nurse and hospice aide are on duty 24-hours a day.
