Dr. George Norris, right, bids farewell to a retiring Richmond County Schools employee on June 12 during the second annual end-of-year summer picnic for staff at Richmond Senior High School. Norris himself is retiring after seven years with the local school system.

The meeting, which will take the place of the regularly scheduled July gathering, is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the board’s administrative office at 118 Vance St. in Hamlet. No less than three Richmond County Schools sources, including two board members, indicate that members discussed the appointing of an interim superintendent during executive sessions at the board’s May and June meetings.

Applications for superintendent are being handled by the board attorney. Applications must be postmarked no later than June 20 to be considered. It’s currently unknown how many have applied for the position.

The interim superintendent will serve as a temporary fill-in for Dr. George Norris, who is retiring after seven years with Richmond County Schools and 43 years in education. He and his wife, Teresa, plan to remain in Richmond County upon retirement.

The June 26 meeting also will be used to swear in incoming board members Bobbie Sue Ormsby and Don Greene. Ormsby was the top vote-getter among seven Board of Education candidates in the May 6 primary election.

Ormsby, 66, of Rockingham, retired in the fall of 2013 as principal of L.J. Bell Elementary School and brings 37 years of experience in education to the board. Greene, 56, of Rockingham, spent 30 years as a teacher before retiring in June of 2013.
