Richmond County sheriff’s deputies managed to catch up with 17-year-old Jacob Trey McKenzie, of Minturn Avenue in Hamlet, three days after he was named as a suspect in an argument that turned violent.
McKenzie, on the run since Wednesday, was caught Saturday in Bennettsville, S.C., and was arrested while riding in a vehicle, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. McKenzie waived extradition and was returned to Richmond County.
On Wednesday, deputies responded to a 911 emergency call for a report of a possible gunshot victim on Duncan Road in Hamlet. When deputies arrived, they located a male victim with a gunshot wound to his left hand. According to police, the victim told investigators he had gotten into an argument with McKenzie, and McKenzie pulled out a handgun and shot at him, striking him in his hand.
McKenzie was charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number.
He was placed in Richmond County Jail on a $100,000 secured bond.
