ROCKINGHAM — There’s an advantage to going first.

Last week Julian Carter, principal of Rockingham Middle School, called out all of his certified teachers to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Twenty-nine of them accepted on Friday.

One teacher, Mrs. Deane, who observed Carter’s ice bath last week was not at all interested in wearing a bucket of cold water. But she showed up today wearing a plastic head covering and a smile. Along with Courtney Deane were fellow teachers teachers Rebecca Pierce, Language Arts, Curtis Swallow, band and guitar, and Michelle Usewicz, Social Studies.

Many of the teachers exclaimed how ready they were — or not — before the dumping started. They were smiling from the start, a mixture of nerves and excitement. The teachers lined up outside of the school before a large group on onlookers that included students and colleagues, along with Superintendent Cindy Goodman. Goodman was among the first in the school district to be challenged in her official capacity.

In an assembly line fashion, the buckets of ice water were dumped one after the other ending with Kevin Wallace, assistant principal.

“It was great,” said Carer. “But it was especially great to see Mr. Wallace dumped on, cause he dumped me last week. Our teachers had a good time with this.”

Carter said the teachers were happy to help raise money for ALS. Where does the challenge go from here? Rockingham Middle School teachers call out their own PE department — were mysteriously absent from Friday’s lineup — as well as the staff of Hamlet Middle School.
