Passing motorists and employees of the Social Security Administration on Greene Street in downtown Rockingham on Monday couldn’t have asked for better. At about 3:30 p.m. — in the midst of school bus traffic and the end of the work day at the SSA — a large tree fell, blocking East Greene Street between North Hancock and North Lawrence streets.

“Thank goodness everyone was already gone,” said an SSA employee.

Another SSA worker expressed concern that had the tree fallen only a few minutes sooner, someone could have gotten hurt.

As it was, even SSA employees were able to leave the building despite the fallen tree blocking its entrance. There is a second entrance/exit way from an adjacent business onto North Hancock Street.
