RAEFORD — Fourth-seeded West Hoke edged No. 5 Ellerbe 4-3 on Monday on penalty kicks.
The first-round Southeastern Middle School Conference tournament matchup was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. Stefano Cerna scored his 21st goal of the year and Jose Fonseca connected on a penalty kick.
The Roaring Tigers tied the game on what Ellerbe coach Tommy Shelton called a “questionable penalty” with two minutes left.
The teams played a scoreless overtime period which took the teams into a penalty kick situation. Wildcat goalie James Melton saved one of the penalties, but West Hoke connected on its other four attempts to win the shootout, 4-3. Cerna, Fonseca and Kyle Goodwin each scored their penalty shots, but the Wildcat boys came up one goal short.
The Wildcats soccer season ends with a 5-4-2 record. Cerna finished with 22 goals in 11 games. Fonseca, Goodwin, Melton, Ricardo Vega-Vasquez and Jadeen McIver were also strong players in a very successful season for the Wildcats.
