HAMLET — Timothy McCaskill hauled in the game-winning touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Johnson to lift the Richmond County Speed over the Martinsville Mayhem in a 12-6 thriller on Saturday in Hamlet.
Trey Cole setting up the go-ahead score with a 63-yard run in the fourth quarter. Cole finished with 122 yards on the ground, while McCaskill and Darrell Toomer combined for 83 yards receiving and two scores. Johnson finished with 133 yards passing.
The game was knotted 6-6 at halftime as both teams were led by stout defensive units. The Speed allowed only five first downs and four pass completions while forcing three turnovers. Cornerback Jamar Allen intercepted two passes and safety Jeremy Williams stole another from Martinsville.
“Our team defense has been the best in the league the past two games, they stay hungry and discipline,” said coach Dedrick Petty. “They take pride in teams not being able to score on us.”
The Speed defense is tied for No. 1 defense in the United Carolina Football League while the offense, ranked second in the league, accumulated 289 total yards and two touchdowns.
“This game tested every person within the organization and our character,” Petty said.
The Speed head to Raleigh on Saturday to take on the Triangle Knighthawks. Their next home game will be May 9 — the location of the game will be announced at a later date.
