Morse garners MVP honors in Showcase

Middle infielder Cher Morse hit .500 and went 8-for-8 in stolen bases to earn Most Value Player honors at the Queen of Diamonds Showcase South event Aug. 30 and Aug. 31 at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

Morse, a Richmond Senior High School sophomore, was handpicked for the softball tournament that showcased elite players from around the country and Canada in a tourney that focuses on situational excellence.

There were more than 1,500 applicants from 19 states and Canada. A total of 264 athletes were selected and Morse was one of 24 second basemen selected. She was the only second baseman on Team 20. Her teammates that weekend were from Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, North Carolina and Canada.

The 15-year-old from Rockingham played in three games. She drew five walks at the plate and stole eight bases. In the field, she was a part of four double players.

“I had a great time and met some really cool and talented girls,” Morse said in an email to the Post.

Morse is a short stop and second baseman with the Carolina Rebels 16U travel team. She has helped the Rebels to a 33-10-2 record. In 29 games with the Rebels, she has gone 14-for-47 at the plate for a .298 average with three doubles, four triples, two home runs. Morse has driven in 13 runs and scored 19.
