Shreve collects cash with skip ace on short 8

MOUNT SAVAGE — Bill Shreve skipped his drive from the short No. 8 tee into the basket for a two-stroke swing, creating some separation from himself and the rest of the field in Week 9 of Saturday Morning Tag League at Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage.
Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, threw the sixth ace of the season — and sixth in SMTL history going back to May 2022 — while Colby Mallery, 19, of Mount Savage, carded a par. The difference put Shreve in the lead by one. Mallery tied the score three baskets later, but Shreve’s birdie on short 12 put him in the lead for good.
Shreve finished with an 11 under par 63. His effort included 10 birdies along with the ace. Mallery recorded a 66 with nine birdies and the lone eagle of the day, this one on long 7.
Gordon Cox, 49, of Hagerstown, placed third with a 70 and Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, was one stroke behind in fourth with a 71. Sam Wolodkin, 21, of Frostburg, placed fifth (81) while Tony Miller, 36, of Mercersburg, Pa., rounded out the six-player field with an 82.
The turnout was likely impacted by a forecast of steady rain — which rang true for most of the round — and a temperature in the high 50s, marking a cool start to the first Autumn weekend of the year.
Shreve’s ace is the latest in a string of hole-in-ones this season. During the 2022 SMTL season, there were no aces recorded. Spradlin started things off by throwing the first ace in SMTL history on May 27, coming on long 3. Keith Raynor (short 3) and Rick Perkins (short 10) each threw one on July 8. Cox recorded his first ace on July 22 in an SMTL round (short 6).
There are only two remaining dates in Saturday Morning Tag League this season: Oct. 14 and Oct. 28. Tee time is 10 a.m. Play is open to the public and is $5 per player, per round. No tag/membership is required.
