MOUNT SAVAGE — Scott Mallery’s Friday night round of 61 withstood all challengers over the four-day weekend, as the 55-year-old Mount Savage resident earned a Men’s Advanced Division win in Week 8 of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Summer Flex League at Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage. Twenty-one players completed at least one round this week.
Mallery through an ace from short No. 4 during his Saturday Morning Tag League round, but by the end of the round — when he chose whether or not to make his SMTL round his SFL round, too — he knew Friday night’s performance, at 13 under par, was much better than his 67 on Saturday.
Bill Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, threw his best during SMTL play, finishing with a 63 — one stroke better than his previous record — to finish second, while Ethan von Hagel, 20, of Cumberland, placed third with a 64. Gordon Cox, 49, of Hagerstown, placed fourth (65) while Sam Wolodkin, 21, of Frostburg, rounded out the five-player field within the division with a 66.
Shreve, von Hagel and Cox all earned one bonus point for recording or tying their best mark over the SFL weekend during SMTL competition on Saturday.
Shreve maintains a two-point lead in the SFL standings through Week 8 with 38 points, followed by Mallery with 36 and Wolodkin with 30.
The 2023 SFL season is 14 weeks long and concludes with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course in Frostburg.
Boys’ Division
Birthday boy Evan Padovini, 12, of Frostburg, earned his second Summer Flex League division win by posting a three over par 75 from 24 short tees. He edged Josiah Spradlin, 13, of Frostburg, by two strokes. Spradlin chose to throw 12 from the short tees and 12 from the long tees and it cost him, but perhaps not as much as it cost his little brother.
Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 10, of Frostburg, held a three-point lead over Padovini for second place in the SFL Boys’ Division through seven weeks. Padovoni closed the gap to a single point with the win, an effort aided by four birdies.
Spradlin maintains a 10-point lead over his little brother for the division lead, with Padovini a close third.
Women’s Division
Shania Farris rolled to her eighth consecutive Summer Flex League division win, this time winning by a mere four strokes over Albina Stiffler.
Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., played 12 from the short tees and 12 from the long tees in preparation for the third annual Summer Fling Doubles Tournament on Aug. 26. Stiffler, 23, of Cumberland, played all 24 holes from the short tees as league rules permit. She posted an 80, bettering her Week 5 score by five strokes.
Krystal Mallery, 50, of Mount Savage, threw 13 strokes better to finish in third place with an 85. Stephanie Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, took fourth (94) while embracing the challenge of playing the same layout as Farris.
Men’s Rec Division
Tim Farris, 27, of Wiley Ford, earned at least a share of first place for the fourth straight week, posting a 65 during his SMTL round on Saturday morning. He finished with a division-best 12 birdies.
Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, placed second with a 67 and Ethan Shreve, 20, of Cumberland, earned a podium finish with a 69. Brian Padovini, 43, of Frostburg, broke a logjam early in the weekend with an extra round on Sunday to finish fourth (70).
There was a three-way tie for fifth: Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, Tim Lick 33, of Cumberland, and Richard Smith, 50, of Hagerstown, each carded a 70.
