* The Woodshed on DG Course Review
PAW PAW, W.Va. — Allegany County Disc Golf Club members David Warder, Ethan von Hagel and Bill Shreve competed in the “You Win Some, You ‘Hughes’ Some” tournament, a one-round PDGA C Tier event at the private The Woodshed course in Paw Paw, W.Va.
The event is unique in that it allows the winner of the MPO Division to rename the event the following year. In 2022, Nathan Hughes won. This year, the Stephens City, Va., player placed fifth with a four under par 61 while Zach Shiley, of White Post, Va., won the overall title with an eight under par 57. He was only one stroke ahead of runner-up James E. Sibert Sr., of Edinburg, Va.
Warder, 32, of Frostburg, competed in the MA2 Division and placed fifth among eight competitors with a seven over par 72. Warder, with a PDGA rating of 886, threw a 40 on the front nine and finished strong with a 32 on the back nine, including his only birdie of the nine on No. 16. Warder finished with a round rating of 903.
Von Hagel entered with a PDGA rating of 851 and was one place and four strokes behind Warder with a 76. Von Hagel, 20, of Cumberland, was one stroke ahead of Warder at the midway point with a 39. Like Warder, he threw his only birdie of the day on the back nine, taking only two strokes to go all 416 feet from tee pad to pin on No. 12. He finished with a round rating of 871. Anthony Scolaro, 38, of Martinsburg, W.Va., tied for first in the MA2 Division with a three over par 68. Scolaro is not an Allegany County Disc Golf Club member — yet, at least — but has completed each of the first four Fisher Cup courses in 2023.
Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, placed sixth out of seven competitors in the MA3 Division with an 82. Shreve entered with a PDGA rating of 822 and played to a round rating of 824. Shreve tallied 45 strokes on the front nine and settled in on the back nine with a 37. He managed to throw for par on seven of 18 holes (38.9 percent).
Nick Russ, of Cumberland, is not a club member but is one of the top players in Allegany County. Russ tied for third in the MA 1 Division with a five over par 70, only one stroke behind co-leaders Jake Mullins and Tom Ireland.
