N. Spradlin shines brightest in 2nd glow round at Hoffman Park DGC

Beachy (2nd), Records (9th), Scott (11th) become club members

FROSTBURG — Noah Spradlin insisted that he played his best disc golf at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course during the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s inaugural round at the Frostburg location.

Turns out, that’s not true. He just needed to dim the lights a bit.

Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, took advantage of a dark night to lead a 12-player field with a four under par 50, two strokes better than his score 13 days earlier. He edged Dan Beachy, 39, of Frostburg, by a single stroke. Beachy — one of three players to complete their first rounds with the club and become members — finished with a 51. Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, rounded out the podium with a third-place finish (52).

Bill Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, and Josiah Spradlin, 13, of Frostburg, each carded a 53 to tie for fourth. It was the younger Spradlin’s first disc golf round since early March, and his first time playing at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course.

Mr. and Mrs. Farris, of Wiley Ford, W.Va. — Tim and Shania, respectively — finished sixth and seventh, scoring a 54 and a 55, also respectively. Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, placed eighth with a 58, only three strokes ahead of newcomer Brian Records, 21, of Cumberland (61). It was Records’ first time playing organized disc golf, though he is a former ultimate frisbee player. Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, placed 10th with a 73. Chris Scott, 24, of Rosaryville, finished 11th (78) and Stephanie Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, placed 12th (83). Along with Beachy and Records, it was Scott’s first round with the club. Like Records, it was Scott’s first time at Hoffman Park. It was his second round of disc golf on the day — and of his life — as he had completed 24 holes at Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage earlier Saturday morning.

Noah Spradlin led the field by two or more strokes at the midway point, needed only 24 strokes to get through the first nine baskets. Beachy and Shania Farris were tied for second (26) while Raynor, Tim Farris, Josiah Spradlin and Kevin Spradlin were tied for fourth (27).

Beachy finished first in the birdie count with seven, followed by six apiece for Noah Spradlin and Raynor. Josiah Spradlin threw five birdies and Shreve finished with four. Records recorded his only birdies of the round on No. 2 both times around the circuit.

Membership update

Membership into the Allegany County Disc Golf Club is simple and affordable.

Play a round (which is usually free) and a player’s membership is secured for life. Its a one-time transaction. Each new player is slotted into the club’s rankings (Men’s Advanced, Men’s Recreation, Women’s, Youth-Boys and Youth-Girls). Singles, doubles, glow rounds all count. Fisher Cup rounds do not count towards membership.

The club now has 76 members, at least 29 (38.2 percent) of whom are age 21 or younger.

A total of 61 players have completed at least one round with the club in 2023. Players have ranged in age from 8 to 72, including six women and 11 kids (nine boys and two girls).
