FROSTBURG — This time, Colby Mallery left no doubt.

The 19-year-old Mount Savage resident and Allegany College of Maryland student finished in second place — by a single stroke — earlier this month in the first week of the second year of Saturday Morning Tag League at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage.

Nate Richards goes to the forehand for an approach shot on No. 24.

This time, Mallery carded birdies on 15 of 24 holes (62.5 percent) en route to a seven-stroke victory in Week 2 in a 12-player field, finishing with a 14 under par 60. The twice-monthly tag league uses the 24-hole layout, including 12 baskets from the short tees and 12 baskets from the long tees. Female and youth players are permitted to throw all 24 holes from the short tees.

Frostburg residents David Warder, 32, and Kevin Spradlin, 44, tied for second, both finishing with a 67. Warder had nine birdies while Spradlin threw eight birdies and the first ace in SMTL history. He borrowed a Berg putter from his son and it sailed 151 feet down hill from the No. 3 long tee pad into the orange basket. It was Spradlin’s second ace of his disc golf life, which began at Mile Lane Disc Golf in December 2020. It was also his second ace in in just under 17 hours. Spradlin’s score of 67 was three strokes better than his previous best of 70, set one month ago.

Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage, placed fourth with a 68, while there was a three-way tie for fifth that included Bill Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, Seth Wilson, 28, of Cresaptown, and Tim Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va. The trio each needed 70 strokes over the 24 holes.

Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, placed eighth with a personal best 72. The mark is two strokes better than his previous best of 74 set in Week 1, and it is only the second time he has thrown under par on any course. The other time was a two under par on March 31, 2023, on the short-to-red layout at Ditto in Hagerstown

Week 1 winner Shania Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, took ninth with a 73, while Nic Davies, 26, of Mount Savage, placed 10th with a 75. Newcomers Nate Richards, 23, of Columbia, and Chris Scott, 24, of Rosaryville, rounded out the 12-player field with an 81 and 112, respectively. The Frostburg State University graduates had returned to the Mountain City to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend with friends. Richards said he hadn’t played disc golf since the sixth grade. For Scott, it was his first time throwing plastic and still he managed eight bogeys over the front 12 and six more over the arguably more difficult back 12.

Mallery led Spradlin by four strokes at the midway point, and tied Wilson with 34 for the hot back 12.

Week 3 of Saturday Morning Tag League is set for June 10. Tee time is 10 a.m.
