ACCIDENT — Did it come down to a drive and two putts?

Colby Mallery goes fishing for a wayward Volt thrown by someone who shouldn’t have thrown a Volt for his approach shot.

Well, no. There were plenty of other strokes at play.

But Colby Mallery’s drive on No. 12, followed by his putt for the birdie, packaged with teammate Noah Spradlin’s birdie-saving putt on No. 15, helped the pair jump to the top of the standings in Week 6 of the Winter Doubles League on Sunday at The Glades at Meshach Run in Accident.

Mallery, 19, of Mount Savage, and Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, were tied for second after the front nine with David Warder, 31, of Frostburg, and Shania Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., with 30 strokes apiece. The two teams looked up in the standings by one place — and two strokes — to Tim Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, and Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage.

It was Tim Farris, the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Player of the Month for January, who chose Sunday’s format. It was a modified version of best shot in which one player on each team drove from the tee pad on the front nine. From the lie of that team’s drive, each team played the rest of the basket in a best shot format. On the back nine, the other playing partner took over driving duties.

Mallery and Farris went up by three strokes with a birdie on No. 11 while the rest of the field managed par. On No. 12, Team Mallery-Spradlin cut their deficit from three strokes to one when Mallery managed a CTP-winning drive and a putt for birdie. Both Team Mallery-Farris and Team Warder-Farris, meanwhile, bogeyed the basket.

Two baskets later, Team Mallery-Spradlin took the lead on the second time around for the power line basket. The duo threw a three-stroke birdie, while Team Mallery-Farris double bogeyed and Team Warder-Farris managed par to gain a stroke.

Standing on the side of a hill in mud and wet grass, Mallery missed the putt for birdie on No. 15. Spradlin, though, came through as they doubled their lead to two strokes.

Team Mallery-Spradlin took first with a two under par 56 and led with four birdies. Team Mallery-Farris placed second (58) — and second in birdies with three — while Team Warder-Farris finished a close third (60). Frostburg residents Kevin Spradlin, 43, and Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, placed fourth (67).

Despite the balmy start-time temperature around 42 degrees, all eight players worked through strong winds, especially over the front nine.

Week 6 notes

* No aces today; the ace pot is now at $131.

* Tim Farris, January Player of the Month, selected a $15 gift certificate to the Mile Lane Disc Golf retail store as his prize.

* Colby Mallery won CTP on No. 3/12. He earned the pro version of the Frisbee flip app. It’s possible the app will be used in Week 9 of Winter Doubles League on Feb. 26 at Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage.

Winter Doubles League Week 6 results

Week 6 of Winter Doubles League offered players “double points” — simply, their regular points earned multiplied by two. It’s an incentive offered one week each of WDL and Fall Doubles League to celebrate public disc golf courses.
