Shreve shines in the dark

Raynor 2nd, N. Spradlin 3rd

CUMBERLAND — Bill Shreve averaged 49.8 strokes over the traditional 18-hole layout at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland over 30 consecutive weeks of summer league play.

In the dark, he’s just about as good.

The 46-year-old Cumberland resident threw a four-under par 51 on Thursday during the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s second-ever glow round. He finished with six birdies, and led the field by six strokes at the finish. Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, was second with a 57 while Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, was only two strokes over his best-ever performance on the same course, this time with a 61. Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, rounded out the grown-ups with a 62.

The group enjoyed a temperature near 50 degrees and a slight by mostly steady wind of about 5 mph during the round, which took nearly two hours.

Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang shaved five strokes off his previous best to finish with his personal best of 69. The 9-year-old from Frostburg shaved five strokes off his previous best at Central. He threw a 74 on Oct. 15, 2022. It was the first time Spradlin-Vogelsang managed a 60-something on any course. He was justifiably stoked.

Shreve led Raynor by two strokes — 24 to 26 — at the midway point, while Noah Spradlin was at 28 and his dad one stroke behind him. Shreve and Raynor remained separated by two strokes over the first five baskets on the back nine. On No. 15, though, both Shreve and Raynor (well, and pretty much everyone) ran into trouble. Shreve finished with a bogey on the par 4 hole. Raynor triple bogeyed the basket, while the two older Spradlins both carded double bogeys.

Shreve picked up two more strokes on Raynor on No. 17, as the former threw for birdie and Raynor managed a bogey.

The race for third place, though, was just as strong. Noah Spradlin held a one-stroke lead over Kevin Spradlin at the midway point (28 to 29). Noah picked up a stroke on No. 10, Kevin earned it back on No. 11. No. 12 was a wash, but Noah doubled his lead on No. 13 by throwing for par. On No. 15, Kevin got it right back with a drive that landed only a few feet from the basket.

Kevin Spradlin forged a tie on No. 16. Though he flubbed his drive right into “the” tree in the middle of the fairway, Noah Spradlin was forced to scramble from the woodline on the left side. He did so successfully — then botched a par-saving putt and settled for bogey to his dad’s par. Tied heading into No. 18, both Spradlins drove well enough — Noah longer, as usual — but Kevin followed up with an approach shot that put him roughly 12 feet from the basket. Noah’s second shot had him to the left of the basket, about 15 feet from the pin. Noah putted first and made it. Unfortunately, Kevin’s lie was under the tree, and he opted to make the putt from his knee. The disc flew low and bounced off the middle of the cage, securing Noah’s third-place finish.

The glow round was Noah Spradlin’s first time playing in the dark, Lukes second time and Kevin’s fourth time. For that matter, it might have been Bill’s second round of glow disc golf. Raynor was the glow disc golf veteran of the group.

The Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s first glow round took place on Dec. 2 at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage. There, Ethan von Hagel, 20, of Cumberland, threw even par 54 for the victory on the 18-hole layout from the short tees. Kevin Spradlin was second (56) while newcomer Noah Davis, 8, of Frostburg, was third (80) in his glow disc golf debut.
