MOUNT SAVAGE — On Saturday while on a disc golf course, 8-year-old Noah Davis said he was looking forward to spending time with his relatives.

On Sunday, he brought them to the disc golf course.

The Griffith family made the trek from Wyommissing, Pa., nearly three hours away from Allegany County, in order to spend time over the holiday break with family and friends. Father Jason Griffith, daughter Haley, 11, and  Jackson, 9, were pulled along by Davis, of Frostburg, (and mom Amy Davis) to Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage for Week 6 of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Fall Doubles League.

All three were new to the sport, but all three earned podium finishes in their respective divisions while playing a modified best shot format. Bill Shreve, the club’s October Player of the Month and the current overall Fall Doubles League points leader, came up with the idea to limit each player to two discs. Adults played the 24-hole layout from the short tees, while the kids played 12 holes from the short tees. While every hole from the short tees is considered a Par 3, Nos. 2, 3 and 9 were modified to a Par 2 during this week’s play. Overall, then, the 24-hole layout was deemed a par 66 instead of the usual par 72.

The catch Shreve threw in this week for adults was that if a team threw for bogey (or worse) on a given hole, each player on that team was limited to a single disc until that team threw for birdie to earn back their discs.

This week, players were paired based on the club’s ranking system.

Advanced / Rec Division (combined this week)

Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, and Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, held of all challengers to win the combined Advanced / Rec Division with a 57. Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage, and Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, finished a single stroke behind (58). Colby Mallery, 19, of Mount Savage, helped lead visitor and first-time player Jason Griffith, 48, over the tournament layout to finish in third with a 62. Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, played Cali style — he was permitted one “re-throw,” or do-over, on each hole, though he didn’t use that resource at any point on the day and finished in fourth with a 64.

At the midway point, Raynor and Shreve (27) had a one-stroke lead over Mallery and Spradlin (28), but Mallery and Spradlin tied it up on the 13th hole (No. 6) with a birdie. Two holes later, though, the wheels fell off — albeit temporarily — for Mallery and Spradlin. On holes 15 and 16 (Nos. 2 and 3), Spradlin and Mallery threw for par, then their only bogey of the day for seven strokes. Raynor and Shreve, meanwhile, totaled only four strokes for two birdies and a lead they would not relinquish.

Team Mallery-Spradlin cut the deficit to two strokes by throwing for par on the 19th hole (No. 8), and then cut Team Shreve-Raynor’s lead in half — to a single stroke — on the 24th and final hole.

At the same time there was a fight for third place. Colby Mallery and Griffith had tied with Kevin Spradlin (playing on a separate card) with a 31 at the midway point. Spradlin took a one-stroke lead on his 14th hole (No. 2), but gave it back two holes later on No. 4 (while Mallery and Griffith threw for birdie on No. 3). Spradlin gave up a stroke on three straight holes (18-20), as par on Nos. 6, 7 and 8 were not good enough.

Youth Division

Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, and teammate Haley Griffith, 11, took a one-stroke lead on the first hole of the day and never looked back. Together, they finished seven under par with a 42 over 12 holes.

The dynamic duo managed six birdies, threw for par four other times, an eagle on No. 12, while throwing for only one bogey (No. 10).

Challengers Noah Davis and Jackson Griffith, 9, were down by two strokes at the midway point (22 to 24) but lost another stroke on No. 7. A light rain began to fall as the group started No. 11, and by the time they were at the tee pad for No. 12, it was pouring.

Week 6 notes

* Scott Mallery (No. 8) and Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang (No. 7) won CTP contests and each will receive a $5 gift certificate to the Mile Lane Disc Golf retail store.

* Through six weeks, the club has collected $280 in registration fees, plus another $66 in the ace pot.

* The club’s Player of the Month for November award will be announced later this week.

* Scott Mallery, of Mile Lane Disc Golf, gave two new putters to the Griffith family for Haley and Jackson to take home.

* Week 7 of Fall Doubles League returns to The Glades in Accident on Sunday, Dec. 4. Tee time is 2 p.m. The club’s inclement weather plan is in effect, which means that if The Glades course is not playable on Dec. 4, an automatic Plan B is Central in Cumberland. The call will be made by 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. Stay tuned to the club’s Facebook page or call/text 301-338-4533 before heading to the course. As of this writing, however, there does not appear to be a weather-related reason why the course is not playable on Dec. 4.
