MOUNT SAVAGE — Bill Shreve had the best score of anyone inside the top five over the final 12 holes, an effort that pushed him from fifth to third place in Week 9 of the Saturday Morning Tag League at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage.

Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, was tied for fifth — and second-to-last — with Seth Wilson, 28, of Cresaptown, after the first 12 holes from the short tees with a score of 31. Only Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, was behind them. Spradlin threw a 36 over the first 12 holes in arguably his worst performance from the blue tees.

Sam Wolodkin, meanwhile, wasn’t letting the temps in the high 40s or the big, wet rain drops stop him from having the hot first half. He led the field over the first 12 holes with a 28, six under par. Ethan Von Hagel, 20, of Cumberland, and Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage, were tied for second with a 29.

But disc golf can often be a tale of two halves. While Shreve made a quick wardrobe change before beginning the second half of play from the long tees, Wolodkin kept everything the same — and the only thing that changed was the result. Time and again, the disc simply didn’t fly as Wolodkin expected it to. Wolodkin finished with a 37 on the back 12 to finish with a round-best of 65 on the day. Von Hagel was second with a 66, and Shreve filled out the podium with a 67. Mallery placed fourth with a 68, while Wilson rounded out the top five with a 71. Spradlin threw his best from the long tees on the back 12, a 36, to tie his Week 6 SMTL-best effort with a three under 72.

The final weekend of SMTL action for 2022 is set for a 10 a.m. tee time on Oct. 22. Registration begins at 9:45 a.m. Play is open to the public. Registration is $5 per player.
