CUMBERLAND — Noah Davis and Lily Lick pulled out boys’ and girls’ division wins, respectively, during Week 1 of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Youth League.
Davis, 8 of Frostburg, earned a one-stroke victory over Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, in three baskets of singles play on Monday at Central in Cumberland. Weeks 2, 3, 4 and 5 start at 4 p.m. on the next four Saturday afternoons (Sept. 10, 17, 24 and Oct. 1). Davis finished with a score of 12, while Spradlin-Vogelsang tallied 13.
A pair of Corriganville boys — brothers Chance Troutman, 13, and Baylen Langan, 9 — each scored 21 to forge a tie for third place. Lick, 9, of Cumberland, won the girls’ division with a score of 23. Davis carded a four on each of the three baskets, while Spradlin-Vogelsang matched Davis on the first two but lost a stroke on No. 3. Chance Troutman’s best hole was his first, on which he scored a 5, while little brother Baylen threw a 6, also on his first hole.
Players were matched up for doubles play using the the best shot method. There, Lick and her father, Sam Lick, won the four-team competition with an even par score of 9. Frostburg residents Kevin Spradlin, 43, and Noah Spradlin, 23, finished one stroke behind (10). The duo of Spradlin-Vogelsang and Chance Troutman teamed up for a third-place finish (12) while Davis and Langan were only one stroke off the pace (14).
Youth League is free to play, and parents are encouraged to play alongside their kids or on a separate card. Along with getting plastic into the players’ hands — mostly for the first time — the players are given instruction about game rules, etiquette and technique along the way.
League play resumes at 4 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Central in Cumberland. Weeks 3, 4 and 5 will be played at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage.
