Second effort earns Campbell ace, SFL win

ACCIDENT — The first ace in Summer Flex League action propelled Caleb Campbell to the Week 5 victory Aug. 5 through Aug. 8 at The Glades at Meshach Run Disc Golf Course, located at Deep Creek Lions Community Park in Garrett County.

Campbell, 19, of Oakland, threw plastic some 300 feet from the tee pad on No. 13. The disc landed in the cage on the Par 3 hole. The eagle proved to be the difference as Campbell finished with a nine under par 49.It’s possible that Campbell’s ace is the first on the course since it opened to public play in May.

David Warder, 31, of Frostburg, placed second, a single stroke behind (50). Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, filled out the podium with a three under 55. Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage, was fourth (57) and Evan Kaye, 18, of Ellicott City, rounded out the top five with an even par 58.Warder finished the round with nine birdies and only one bogey, while Shreve tallied six birdies and Mallery five.

League play is free. Players are able to complete as many rounds as they wish, and their best score counts. Campbell’s second round of the extended weekend shaved four strokes off the 53 he threw on Saturday. The winning effort included nine birdies and was the only bogey-free round among 17 athletes.

Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, was the third new player to complete a league round to finish in the top six. Raynor finished with a 61, two strokes ahead of Ethan von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland, and Nicholas Willmon, 28, of Oakland. Willmon and von Hagel each threw a 63.

Steve Kaye, of Ellicott City, and Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, tied for ninth with a 67. Matt Marsh, 20, of Oakland, placed 11th (77) while Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, rounded out the men’s division with a 78.

Becky Shreve and Josiah Spradlin each posted their fifth consecutive win in as many weeks of Summer Flex League play. Players in the women’s and youth divisions were required to play only nine holes.

Shreve, 41, of Cumberland, completed two rounds of nine, posting a best of 34 on Sunday morning while Stephanie Spradlin, 42, of Frostburg, placed second (43).

Josiah Spradlin, 12, of Frostburg, once again led the boys in the youth division with a 38. Little brother Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, placed second (47) while Gary Schultz, 9, of Frostburg, finished third in his league debut.

The Summer Flex League is free to play. Rounds must be completed between 8 a.m. Friday through 9 p.m. Monday within the specified time period. League play concludes Aug. 19 through Aug. 22 at. Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in. Mount Savage.

It was the first league event of any kind at The Glades, which had a soft opening in May and will celebrate its grand opening at 6 p.m. on Aug. 17. Seventeen players completed 25 rounds of disc golf over the four-day period.
