FROSTBURG — For the first time this summer, Becky Shreve and Josiah Spradlin finished second to someone else.

Scott Mallery has been named the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Player of the Month for August. Voters chose between four players using a ranked-choice method — five points for first place, four place for second place, three points for third place and two points for fourth place. All three voters cast their first-place ballots in Mallery’s favor.

Twelve-year-old Josiah Spradlin, of Frostburg, finished second in the voting, garnering all three second-place votes and finishing with 12 points. Shreve, 41, of Cumberland, finished third with nine points while Gary Schultz Jr., 9, of Frostburg, was fourth with six points. Mallery will receive a modest gift certificate to his favorite disc golf vendor for earning the monthly award.

Boy oh boy, did Mallery have a month. The 54-year-old Mount Savage resident eked out a one-point win over Bill Shreve to win the Men’s Division in the Summer Flex League. It took 15 birdies over 24 holes in the tournament layout at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course — designed, built and maintained by Mallery himself, along with help from family — in the sixth and final week for Mallery to secure the season victory. Of course, it was Mallery who ensured the course was ready for play each day.

But that’s not all. In August, Mallery completed both SFL rounds (including Week 5 at The Glades at Meshach Run in Garrett County), planned and hosted the 2nd annual Summer Fling Doubles Tournament at Mile Lane (in which he and his playing partner finished second). In addition, Mallery placed first in Week 6 of his own creation, Saturday Morning Tag League at Mile Lane, and finished second in Week 7.

The other three players on the ballot didn’t post that kind of resume in August — but they did all they could.

Both Shreve and Spradlin capped a season-long Summer Flex League performance with two more division wins in August. Shreve led four competitors in the women’s division and her average margin of victory was 10.5 strokes. Spradlin, meanwhile, led a five-person division and averaged 12.5 strokes over the runner-up each week. Spradlin also teamed up with his dad in the Summer Fling Doubles Tournament, doing well enough in the first round to tie or beat five other teams, and earn a spot in the Advanced Division for round two (beating three teams).

Schultz, meanwhile, began playing disc golf earlier this summer. The Beall Elementary School student participated in the club’s private Par 2 Invitational in June — placing third in the youth division — before being a part of the club’s first Youth Disc Golf Clinic in July. That preparation set the stage for Schultz to join his friend and neighbor, Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, at The Glades in Week 5 of the SFL for a difficult round of nine before finishing up summer competition Week 6 with solid play for his first time at the tree-lined Mile Lane Disc Golf Course.
