FROSTBURG — There was a change at the top of only one of the four divisions in the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s inaugural Summer Flex League.

With only two weeks remaining in league play, Becky Shreve leads the women’s division, Josiah Spradlin sits atop the boys’ division, Karli Huff remains alone in the girls’ division and Scott Mallery holds a one-point lead over former No. 1 Bill Shreve for the top spot in the men’s division.

Women’s division

Shreve, 41, of Cumberland, continued to win in dominant fashion for the fourth time in as many tries and increased her lead over second-place Stephanie Spradlin, 42, of Frostburg, by 50 percent — thanks to Krystal Mallery. Mallery, 50, of Mount Savage, played spoiler this week and finished second in Week 4 play. That allowed Shreve to earn 10 points for the week — five for the win, one for participation and four more for playing in four consecutive weeks.

Spradlin, meanwhile, maintained an eight-point lead over Mallery in the division. Both players earned eight points — Spradlin got three for third place, one for participation and four for playing in four consecutive weeks, while Mallery earned four for second place, one participation and three more for playing since Week 2.

Boys’ division

Like Shreve, Josiah Spradlin, 12, of Frostburg, continues to overwhelm all competitors — the most consistent of which is his little brother, 9-year-old Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang. Josiah increased his lead over Luke to five points, from four after Week 3. In Week 4 action, Josiah’s play from the long tees suggested a possible move to the big boys

Girls’ division

Karli. Huff, 12, of Frostburg, played in Week 2 and hasn’t thrown plastic since. As the only competitor in her division, she remains precariously perched at the top. The bonus points offered for Week 5 (see below for details) could entice others in her division to come out of the woodwork.

Men’s division

The third time was the charm for Scott Mallery. Playing on the course he designed and built, the 54-year-old Mount Savage resident scored 60 and 58 in his first two rounds of the four-day weekend. The third time out — and the last before heading out of town for vacation — was the charm, as he threw a 5 under par 55, second only to his son Colby (53) in the weekly competition.

With the second-place finish earning him four points, plus one participation point and four points for playing in four consecutive weeks of SFL action, the eight points catapulted Mallery past Bill Shreve for first place in the men’s division: Mallery 25, Shreve 24.

Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, tied with Seth Wilson, 28, of Cresaptown, for fifth in Week 4, each finishing with a 57.

Points doubled for Week 5 at The Glades

Whatever points a player earns in Week 5, their weekly point tally will automatically be doubled. The goal is two-fold. First, it will reward players who travel from Allegany County to The Glades at Meshach Run, located in Garrett County at 1249 Bumble Bee Road, a couple miles south of the town of Accident. Second, it is to celebrate the recent opening of the course at Deep Creek Lions Community Park — it is the only public disc golf course in Maryland located west of Hagerstown.

So, if Week 4 had been Week 5, Scott Mallery would have earned 18 points (instead of nine), while Bill Shreve  and Colby Mallery each would have earned 12.

With the bonus points being offered in Week 5, every division remains up for grabs. A female player in the 17-and-under division can finish Week 5 leading her division for the summer by completing a single round.

Prizes

As stated in the beginning, prizes will be awarded based on a mix of performance and participation. The top three spots in the men’s and women’s division will receive modest cash prizes, while the top two spots in the boys’ division, and (as of now) the only player in the girls’ division, will receive gift cards.

Week 5 of the SFL, which is free to play for all, will be played at The Glades, and league play will wrap up with Week 6 (Aug. 19-22) at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage.
