CUMBERLAND — Six of the 13 players who completed a round in Week 17 of the Western Maryland Disc Golf summer league threw better than their season average.
But for the second time in seven weeks, Sean Fiscus was the only one to set a season best in league play.
Fiscus, 20, of LaVale, threw a 3 under 52 on Thursday at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland. He finished ninth among 13 players who completed the round on the course. He has an average score of 55.57 threw seven rounds of league play since returning to Allegany County on summer break from Duke University.
As for Nick Russ, he also beat his season average — by one-third of a stroke.
Russ, 43, of Cumberland, finished with at least a share of the lead for the lead for the fifth time in nine attempts since weekly league play began in March for the 2022 season. His season average is 46.33.
Russ edged Nolan Jones (47) by a single stroke for the win. Devon Spiker, 19, of Frostburg, took third (49). Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, finished fourth (51) while there was a five-way tie for fifth (52): Brett Workman; Nic Davies, 26, of Mount Savage; Ethan von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland; Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage; and Fiscus.
Sam Wolodkin, 20, of Frostburg, placed 10th (57) while B.J. Lewis, of Frostburg, tied with Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, for 11th as each player threw a 58. Jack Twigg, 19, threw a 59 to round out the field of 13 players who finished the round.
League play resumes Thursday, July 14 at Central. Registration begins at 5:15 p.m. and players toe the tee pads at 5:30 p.m. Weekly play is $5 per player.
The Saturday Morning Tag League in Mount Savage resumes Saturday, July 9 at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course. Tee time is 10 a.m. Play is $5 per player.
