MOUNT SAVAGE — Colby Mallery sometimes will show up to play disc golf without his discs. This past weekend, he arrived sans shirt.

It didn’t matter.

The 19-year-old Mount Savage resident and Allegany College of Maryland goalkeeper on the Trojans soccer team was one of three players to throw seven birdies but the only one to post a week-low score of 53, leading a field of 16 players in Week 4 of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s inaugural Summer Flex League.

League play rotates between courses in Cumberland, Mount Savage and Accident. Players can complete as many rounds as they want within the allotted timeframe, and the best round counts for official scoring purposes. Sixteen different players completed a total of 28 rounds during Week 4 action.

This time, Mallery was on his home course — literally. Mile Lane Disc Golf Course is built on family property and encircles his grandmother’s house. Mallery finished at 7 under par and two strokes ahead of his father, Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage (55).

Frostburg residents Devon Spiker, 19, and Sam Wolodkin, 20, tied for third, each with a 56. Wolodkin threw for four birdies on the front nine. Spiker threw five, but the effort was partially obscured by a double bogey on No. 6. Both shared a score of 26 at the midway point, and Wolodkin forged a tie when he threw for par on No. 18 to Spiker’s bogey.

Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, and Seth Wilson, 28, of Cresaptown, each threw a 57 to tie for fifth place while Ethan von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland, and Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, tied for seventh (59). It was Spradlin’s fourth and final league round of the weekend — punctuated by Monday evening rain over the last three holes — on which he earned only his second under par score on any course, and first in league play.

Nic Davies, 26, of Mount Savage, finished ninth (62) and Ethan Shreve, 18, of Cumberland, placed ninth (64) and Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, rounded out the top 10 with a personal best score of 69 and threw his first birdies of his young disc golf career.

Shreve, Spradlin win again

Does winning every become boring? Don’t ask Becky Shreve or Josiah Spradlin.

Shreve, 41, of Cumberland, posted her fourth win in as many Summer Flex League weeks and strengthened her hold on the SFL points standings in the women’s division. Shreve finished with a 61, four strokes better than her best effort in Week 2 on the same course.

Krystal Mallery, 50, of Mount Savage, took second place for the first time in three tries. Mallery threw a 68 — nine strokes better than her Week 2 performance and, this week, four strokes ahead of Stephanie Spradlin, 42, of Frostburg.

In the boys’ division, Josiah Spradlin continued to roll. While female players, and those who are under 18 years of age, are permitted to play from the short tees whenever there are multiple layouts available, this week Spradlin chose to play from the long tees. The 12-year-old demonstrated he has started to figure some things out on the disc golf course, showing off his impressive driving ability from the tee pad that recently was measured at more than 300 feet.

From the long tees, Spradlin three for three birdies — on Nos. 3, 5 and 8 — en route to a score of 10 over 70. Younger brother Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, was the only other competitor in the division. He finished with an 83.

League play resumes Aug. 5-8 at The Glades at Meshach Run, located at 1249 Bumble Bee Road, a few miles south of the town of Accident in Garrett County. Owned and operated by the Deep Creek Lions, it is the only public disc golf course in either of Maryland’s two westernmost counties.

Players will earn double the normal available points for Week 5. That is for two reasons. First, it is to celebrate having a public disc golf course to play on. Second, it is to reward players who decide to travel to Accident from Allegany County to play.

The Allegany County Disc Golf Club would like to thank the Mallery family for ensuring the course is in fantastic shape to play, as well as for welcoming players from across the country to enjoy the challenges that Mile Lane Disc Golf Course offers.
